Lave net fishing: an ancient Welsh tradition in trouble
Original: Country diary: Lave net fishing is a tradition in trouble | Gwyneth Lewis
Writer Gwyneth Lewis chronicles lave net fishing, the traditional hand-held net salmon fishery practised on the Severn estuary in Wales, describing it as a tradition in trouble. Practitioners face declining salmon stocks and regulatory pressure that threaten a centuries-old way of life. The piece reflects wider concern about protecting historic fishing methods while conserving endangered fish populations.
Why now: Ongoing tensions between conserving declining salmon stocks and preserving traditional fishing heritage have put lave net fishing back in the spotlight.
