Jaishankar contrasts India and Iran positions on nuclear treaty
Original: Jaishankar draws distinction between India, Iran on NPT amid West Asia conflict
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has drawn a distinction between India and Iran regarding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, speaking amid the ongoing West Asia conflict. His remarks underline New Delhi's position that India, which remains outside the NPT, is a responsible nuclear power, setting its case apart from Iran's disputed nuclear programme as regional tensions escalate.
Why now: The Iran-Israel conflict has put nuclear non-proliferation back at the centre of global attention, prompting India's foreign minister to clarify its stance.
