ICE buys robot dogs, raising surveillance concerns
Original: Opinion | ICE purchase of robot dogs is more than a little chilling
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has purchased robotic dogs, a move drawing criticism as an expansion of surveillance and enforcement technology. Commentators argue the deployment of quadruped robots by an immigration agency is troubling, raising questions about civil liberties, transparency and how autonomous machines will be used against people rather than for inspection or rescue purposes.
Why now: An immigration enforcement agency acquiring police-style robots strikes many as an alarming step in the militarisation of domestic policing.
