Greek trial opens for human rights defenders who helped refugees
Original: #Greece : #Humanrights defenders Tommy Olsen and Panayote Dimitras on trial for their work supporting #refugees and #mig
Human rights defenders Tommy Olsen and Panayote Dimitras went on trial on 6 October in Rhodes, Greece, on charges connected to their work supporting refugees and migrants. Human rights groups have raised concern that the prosecution criminalises humanitarian assistance to people on the move, a pattern critics say is increasingly common in Greece. Supporters are watching the case as a test of whether advocacy for migrants' rights can be prosecuted.
Why now: The trial of two prominent migrant-support advocates is being seen as a test case for humanitarian work in Greece.
