Original: Japan summons US envoy as Marine arrested over killing in Okinawa
Japan has summoned the top US diplomat in the country after American authorities handed over a US Marine arrested in connection with a killing in Okinawa. The case has reignited long-standing tensions between Tokyo and Washington over crimes committed by US military personnel stationed on the southern Japanese island, where the heavy American troop presence has been a source of friction for decades.
Why now: The killing and the diplomatic fallout are straining US-Japan relations over the American military presence in Okinawa.
