Italy registered 651 new deaths from Covid-19 in a single day, one of the deadliest tolls of the outbreak. There is a hint of optimism: the figure is lower than the previous day's 793 deaths, coming two weeks after the government imposed a nationwide lockdown. Officials had said roughly two weeks would be needed to see results, prompting debate over whether the strict measures are beginning to slow the epidemic.

Why now: Italy's daily death toll is being watched worldwide as a test of whether lockdowns can slow the coronavirus pandemic.
