Burnham scraps Starmer's plan to restrict jury trials
Original: NEW: Andy Burnham has officially scrapped Keir Starmer’s plans to limit the use of jury trials [ @Independent ]
Andy Burnham has officially dropped plans, backed by Keir Starmer, to limit the use of jury trials in England and Wales, according to the Independent. The proposal had been floated as part of efforts to cut court backlogs but drew criticism from legal groups and civil liberties campaigners who defended the right to trial by jury. Reaction to the climbdown is pouring in across British politics.
Why now: A senior Labour figure publicly reversing the Prime Minister's courts policy is a significant political u-turn.
