Florida Puts CAIR on State Terrorism List, Sparking Free Speech Fight
Original: Florida Adds CAIR to Terrorism List, Renewing First Amendment Fight
Florida has added the Council on American-Islamic Relations to its state list of terrorist organisations, a move immediately contested by civil liberties advocates as a violation of First Amendment protections. Critics argue the designation conflates advocacy with terrorism and will fuel legal challenges over freedom of speech and association.
Why now: The designation of a major American Muslim civil rights group as a terrorist organisation raises immediate First Amendment concerns and is expected to trigger litigation.
