German singer-songwriter Wolf Biermann has once again made explicitly clear that criticism of Israel is not antisemitism, drawing on a comparison with the lemurs in the second part of Goethe's Faust. Commenters online praised the literary aptness of the argument from Biermann, himself a celebrated poet, amid ongoing heated debate in Germany over where legitimate criticism of Israel ends and antisemitism begins.

Why now: The ongoing Israel-Gaza war has intensified disputes in Germany over the boundary between Israel criticism and antisemitism, making a statement from a prominent figure like Biermann noteworthy.
