Bolsonaro and Lula head to runoff in Brazil's presidential election

Original: Bolsonaro and Lula head to a runoff in Brazil's presidential election

Neither Jair Bolsonaro nor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won an outright majority in Brazil's presidential election, sending the contest to a second-round runoff. The result extends one of the most consequential and polarised votes in the country's recent history, with Brazilians now waiting to choose between the incumbent right-wing president and the former left-wing leader in the decisive round.

Why now: The outcome of the world's fourth-largest democracy's presidential vote was unresolved and will be decided in a runoff.
