India's Caste System Persists in Church Burial Grounds
Original: Even in Many Churches, India’s Caste System Lasts Into the Grave
A report highlighted by Christianity Today examines how caste discrimination continues within many Indian churches, extending even to burial practices where separate grave sites reflect caste divisions among Christians. The piece underscores that centuries of Christian conversion in India have not erased caste hierarchies, with Dalit believers often facing segregation in death as in life, prompting renewed debate about equality within religious institutions.
Why now: It sheds light on the uncomfortable persistence of caste discrimination even among Christian communities, challenging assumptions that conversion to an egalitarian faith eliminates caste prejudice.
