Sandpaper scandal overshadowed South Africa's 2018 cricket triumph
Original: Sandpaper made Australia the story in 2018 while South Africa’s achievement faded into irrelevance
Commentary from the Guardian argues that the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, in which Australian players used sandpaper on the ball during a Test series in South Africa, dominated headlines to such an extent that South Africa's achievement in that series was forgotten. The piece reflects on how Australia became the story while the home side's performance faded into irrelevance.
Why now: Ongoing retrospection around the ball-tampering scandal and how it distorted the narrative of the 2018 series.
