How astronomers book time on JWST and Hubble
Original: How do professional astronomers book time on JWST or Hubble?
Professional astronomers do not simply buy observing sessions on NASA's James Webb Space Telescope or Hubble Space Telescope. Instead, they compete through open, peer-reviewed proposal calls, submitting scientific cases that anonymous committees rank, with approved time granted in hours. The process is explained in detail in a new piece, shedding light on how scarce time on the world's most in-demand space telescopes is allocated.
Why now: Public fascination with JWST and Hubble makes people curious about how scientists actually gain access to these telescopes.
