"Bootycandy" Brings Black Queer Identity to the Stage
Original: “Bootycandy” Takes a Wild, Wicked Tighty-Whitey Ride Through Black Queer Identity
The play "Bootycandy" is drawing attention with its bold, comic exploration of Black queer identity, staged through a riotous coming-of-age story. A theatre review describes it as a wild ride through race, sexuality and family, marked by sharp satire and unflinching honesty about growing up gay in a Black American context.
Why now: A new production or review of the provocative play has prompted fresh discussion of its candid treatment of Black queer identity.
