Yemeni government forces advance toward Bab el-Mandeb Strait
Original: Yemeni government forces advance to Bab el-Mandeb Strait
Yemeni government forces have advanced toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the strategic Red Sea shipping corridor, according to a Reuters report. The move, if consolidated, would give the internationally recognised government a foothold near one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints. Details on the scale of the advance and any clashes remain limited, and there has been no immediate comment from other parties to the conflict.
Why now: The advance puts government forces near a vital global shipping route, raising stakes in Yemen's conflict and for Red Sea security.
