Debate Grows Over Elder-Led Polity in Southern Baptist Churches
Original: Elder Polity: Advantages and Disadvantages for SBC Churches
Southern Baptist churches are weighing elder-led governance, a model in which a body of elders directs church leadership rather than congregational or single-pastor structures. Discussion centers on its advantages, such as shared pastoral accountability and clearer spiritual oversight, against disadvantages including reduced congregational voice and tension with traditional Baptist congregationalism.
Why now: SBC churches are actively reconsidering their governance structures and elder polity is a live internal debate.
