Original: Dennis Hastert, House speaker sullied by abuse case, dies at 84
Dennis Hastert, who served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007, has died at the age of 84. Once second in line to the presidency, his legacy was tarnished in 2015 when he pleaded guilty to structuring bank withdrawals used to conceal sexual abuse of high school students during his earlier career as a wrestling coach in Illinois. He was the first House speaker convicted of a federal crime.
