Nearly 12,000 US School Book Bans Recorded in Single Year
Original: Nearly 12,000 School Book Bans Nationwide in 2025-2026—Biggest Number in a Single Year
PEN America reports nearly 12,000 school book bans across the United States in the 2025-2026 school year, the largest number recorded in a single year. The free expression group's tally covers removals and restrictions of books from public school classrooms and libraries, and the record figure is drawing renewed attention to debates over censorship, parental rights and what materials belong in schools.
Why now: The record total for book bans in one school year is a striking new data point in the ongoing US fight over school censorship.
