Dennis Hastert, the Illinois Republican who served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives from 1999 to 2007, has died at age 84. Hastert was the longest-serving Republican speaker in US history, but his later years were overshadowed by scandal: in 2015 he pleaded guilty in a hush-money case tied to sexual abuse allegations and was sentenced to prison.
Why now: News of the death of a once-powerful congressional leader whose legacy is deeply complicated by his criminal conviction.
