ICC unseals four arrest warrants over Taliban persecution of women
Original: ICC unseals four arrest warrants over Taliban persecution of women and girls
The International Criminal Court has unsealed four arrest warrants linked to the Taliban's persecution of women and girls in Afghanistan. The move marks a rare step by the court over gender-based persecution and signals accountability efforts against the Taliban leadership, whose restrictions on women's education, work and public life have drawn widespread international condemnation since they took power in 2021.
Why now: The ICC's decision to reveal the warrants is a significant new development in international efforts to hold the Taliban accountable for gender persecution.
