Japan Protests After U.S. Marine Accused of Murder
Original: marine
Japan has lodged a formal protest with the United States after a U.S. Marine was accused of murder, the Wall Street Journal reports. The case touches a long-running sore point in the alliance, as crimes by American service members in Japan have repeatedly sparked public anger and disputes over which country holds custody of suspects.
Why now: The accusation reignites long-standing tensions between Japan and the U.S. over the legal status of American military personnel stationed there.
