Daniil Medvedev has been defaulted from a tennis match after striking a spectator with a ball, the BBC reports. Defaulting is one of the harshest penalties in tennis, ending a player's participation immediately. The incident has drawn attention because ball strikes involving officials or spectators rarely result in disqualification, and debate is likely over whether the punishment fits the circumstances.
Why now: Disqualifying a top player like Medvedev for a ball strike is a rare and controversial punishment in tennis.
