Book bans in US public schools have reached a record annual high of about 12,000, according to a report covered by the Guardian. The figures point to a sharp escalation in censorship efforts in American education, with commentators linking the trend to organised campaigns by parents' groups and state-level legislation restricting titles dealing with race, gender and sexuality.
Why now: The record number of banned books confirms a rapid escalation of censorship in US schools, a politically charged issue heading into public debate.
