Von der Leyen visits North Macedonia on Western Balkans trip
Original: European Commission President von der Leyen visits North Macedonia
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has travelled to North Macedonia, a Balkan country seeking progress on its path towards European Union membership. The visit underlines the EU's continued engagement with the Western Balkans, where enlargement hopes depend on reforms and resolving disputes with neighbours. Officials in Skopje have long pushed for a clearer accession timetable.
Why now: EU enlargement in the Western Balkans remains a live political topic and high-level visits signal possible movement on North Macedonia's membership bid.
