Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals captain and the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer, has announced that the 2026-27 season will be his final one in the league. The announcement ends years of speculation about when the 41-year-old Russian superstar would retire, and prompts reflection on a career that included breaking Wayne Gretzky's long-standing goals record in 2025.
Why now: One of hockey's greatest players has just announced his retirement plans, a major sports story.
