The Conservative Party has called on police to arrest and prosecute anyone caught smoking cannabis. A party spokesman said that if an officer can smell cannabis in the air, they should be expected to take action, identify whoever is smoking it, arrest them and prosecute them. The hardline position contrasts with growing calls elsewhere in the UK for cannabis laws to be relaxed or decriminalised.

Why now: The Conservatives' tough enforcement stance on cannabis stands out amid ongoing UK debate over drug policy liberalisation.
