Original: Audiovisual Archeology: Found Footage and the Politics of Historical Representation
The International Documentary Association has published a piece titled 'Audiovisual Archeology: Found Footage and the Politics of Historical Representation', exploring how documentary makers use archival and found footage to construct accounts of the past. The essay considers questions of authorship, selection and bias in assembling historical narratives from pre-existing images, and what that means for how audiences understand recorded history.
Why now: Documentary filmmakers and scholars are engaging with ongoing debates about archival ethics and who controls historical narratives.
