Original: Cormorants increasing on Tennessee River as Congress considers new management rules
Double-crested cormorant populations are growing along the Tennessee River, prompting attention from anglers and wildlife officials who blame the fish-eating birds for losses at fish hatcheries and sport fisheries. Congress is now considering new management rules that could expand how states handle cormorant numbers. Local coverage highlights the tension between conservation protections and the economic impact on fishing communities across the Tennessee Valley.
Why now: Growing cormorant numbers are affecting local fishing interests just as federal legislation on their management is being considered.
