Original: UK threatens to expel Israeli diplomats over planned East Jerusalem consulate closure
The UK has threatened to expel Israeli diplomats in response to a reported plan to close the British consulate in East Jerusalem, according to a Guardian report. The consulate traditionally serves as Britain's diplomatic representation to the Palestinian Authority. The threat signals a serious deterioration in UK-Israel diplomatic relations over the future of the mission.
Why now: A threatened diplomatic expulsion between two countries is a significant escalation that is naturally newsworthy.
