On March 10, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated October 1 as International Coffee Day through Resolution 80/248. The resolution recognizes that coffee provides economic benefits at every step of the global value chain and contributes significantly to the economies of producing countries. The move gives official UN backing to a date already celebrated informally by the coffee industry and lovers worldwide.
Why now: The UN's formal recognition elevates a previously informal celebration into an officially designated international day.
