Original: Gov. Hochul declares upstate NY measles outbreak a ‘disaster emergency’
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency in response to a measles outbreak in upstate New York. The declaration gives state health officials expanded authority to respond to the spread of the disease, which is highly contagious but preventable through vaccination. The move underscores growing concern among public health officials about measles resurgences in the United States.
Why now: A governor declaring a disaster emergency over a vaccine-preventable disease signals an unusually serious public health situation.
