Beijing wanted more from Xi's Washington state visit
Original: Exclusive | Beijing wanted more from Xi’s Washington state visit
Chinese leader Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington delivered less than Beijing had hoped for, according to an exclusive report by the South China Morning Post. The report suggests officials in Beijing had sought greater concessions or outcomes from the trip than what was ultimately achieved, highlighting gaps between the two sides despite the ceremonial significance of the visit.
Why now: US-China relations are under close scrutiny and the report suggests the high-profile summit produced fewer gains than expected.
