Dutch column laments human destruction of the Alps

Original: alpen

A column in de Volkskrant reflects on the Alps and the rare fortune of life on Earth, arguing that humanity squanders that luck by damaging the natural world. The writer calls people 'monsters' for destroying so much of the planet, a starkly pessimistic take that has drawn attention in the Netherlands.

Why now: The column's unusually harsh verdict on humanity's treatment of nature is striking a chord with readers.
