New York declares disaster emergency over measles outbreak
Original: NY declares disaster emergency over measles outbreak; 4 cases confirmed in Ontario County
New York has declared a disaster emergency in response to a measles outbreak, with four confirmed cases in Ontario County. The declaration allows state and local health officials to mobilize emergency resources, speed up vaccination efforts and contain further spread of the highly contagious virus. It comes amid broader concern about measles resurgence in communities with low immunization rates.
Why now: A formal disaster emergency over a vaccine-preventable disease is unusual and raises public health concerns about further spread.
