Saudi-Backed Forces Launch Fight for Bab al-Mandeb

Saudi-backed forces have launched an offensive to wrest control of the Bab al-Mandeb strait from Yemen's Houthis, according to the Wall Street Journal. The strategic waterway links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a critical route for global shipping, making the battle for its surroundings a development with implications far beyond Yemen's civil war.
Why now: The strait is a vital global shipping chokepoint, so renewed fighting there raises concerns about regional stability and maritime trade.
