Amazon spends over $1 billion to counter datacenter opposition
Original: Amazon plows $1B+ into quashing datacenter dissent https://www. theregister.com/systems/2026/1 0/02/shut-up-and-take-our
The Register reports that Amazon has committed more than $1 billion in spending aimed at countering local resistance to its datacenter expansion. The money is said to be directed at communities and campaigns that have pushed back against new datacenter construction, which has drawn criticism over energy and water use. Critics frame the spending as an effort to silence opposition to Amazon's cloud infrastructure growth.
Why now: Growing local and climate-related opposition to datacenter expansion has put Big Tech's response under scrutiny.
