New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a 'disaster emergency' in response to a measles outbreak in upstate New York. The declaration gives state health officials expanded powers to respond to the spread of the disease. The move comes as public health authorities work to contain infections and encourage vaccination in affected communities.
Why now: A state-level disaster emergency over a vaccine-preventable disease is an unusual and alarming public health step.
