Physicists float cosmic strings as explanation for mystery 2023 particle

Original: This May Be the Strangest Explanation Yet for the Mysterious Particle That Slammed Into Earth in 2023 Making it work wou

Scientists are still puzzling over an ultra-high-energy particle that struck Earth's atmosphere in 2023, and one new proposal offers an exotic answer: cosmic strings, hypothetical wrinkles in spacetime left over from the early universe. Making the idea work would require a lot of cosmic strings, but researchers argue wild events may demand wild explanations, and the debate is drawing attention across physics circles.

Why now: A new exotic theoretical explanation for a mysterious high-energy particle that hit Earth in 2023 has just been published and is circulating widely.
