Newly cited figures indicate roughly 1% of adults and young people aged 13 and over in the United States identify as transgender or nonbinary. Critics, including a widely shared post, accuse President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth of mocking transgender people and pursuing policies aimed at erasing them from public life. Supporters of the administration frame its actions as restoring limits on gender policy in the military and federal institutions.

Why now: Ongoing Trump administration policies affecting transgender people have kept the debate over their rights and public treatment highly active.
