Hochul Declares Statewide Measles Emergency in New York
Original: Hochul Declares a Measles Emergency as Cases Rise in Rural New York https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/nyregion/measles-
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state emergency over a rising measles outbreak concentrated in rural parts of the state. The order is intended to speed up the public health response as case counts climb. The news is drawing wide attention as a sign that measles, once considered eliminated in the United States, is again spreading in American communities.
Why now: A governor declaring an emergency over a vaccine-preventable disease is unusual and signals a growing public health concern.
