Quebec separatist party promising referendum wins election
Original: Quebec separatist party that promises another independence referendum wins election | World News | 2news.com
A Quebec separatist party that campaigns on holding another independence referendum has won the provincial election. The result puts the question of Quebec sovereignty back at the centre of Canadian politics, decades after the last referendums in 1980 and 1995. Observers are watching whether the party will move quickly toward a new vote and how the federal government in Ottawa will respond.
Why now: The election result revives the long-dormant debate over Quebec independence, a major political issue in Canada.
