The United Kingdom has reportedly threatened to expel 27 Israeli diplomats if Israel moves ahead with plans to close the British consulate in occupied East Jerusalem. The claim comes from Israeli media reports that remain unverified. The consulate, which predates Israel's 1948 founding, serves as Britain's diplomatic mission to the Palestinian Authority, making its potential closure a significant diplomatic flashpoint between the two governments.
Why now: Tensions between the UK and Israel over the status of East Jerusalem have escalated, and the threatened expulsion of dozens of diplomats would be an extraordinary diplomatic rupture.
