New York declares measles disaster emergency amid US outbreak
Original: ny measles outbreak
New York state has declared a disaster emergency as measles cases resurge in the United States. The move gives health officials expanded powers to respond to the outbreak, which has raised concerns about declining vaccination rates. Officials are urging residents to check their immunisation status as the disease, declared eliminated in the US in 2000, continues to spread.
Why now: A state disaster declaration over a once-eliminated disease is a major public health development drawing widespread attention.
