UN warns food waste drives 10% of global emissions

The UN environment agency warned this week that rotting food waste is responsible for up to 10 per cent of total global greenhouse gas emissions, roughly five times more than the entire aviation sector. When organic matter such as uneaten food is buried in landfill, it decomposes and releases methane, a potent warming gas. Environmental commentators are sharing the figures to argue that cutting food waste must be a bigger climate priority.

Why now: A new UN warning about the scale of food waste emissions compared to aviation is circulating widely.
