AI project aims to decode sperm whale communication

Original: Using A.I. and machine learning to decode communication of sperm whales

A project is applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse sperm whale clicks in an effort to understand how the animals communicate. The work, connected to researchers studying whale vocalisations, is drawing attention as AI tools make it feasible to search vast acoustic datasets for patterns that could amount to a whale 'language'. Enthusiasts of science and technology are debating how close we really are to decoding another species.

Why now: AI advances have made analysing animal communication newly plausible, and the idea of decoding whale language captures the imagination
