Powerful solar eruption may boost northern lights this week
Original: Powerful solar eruption could supercharge the northern lights this week
A powerful solar eruption is expected to reach Earth this week, potentially intensifying the northern lights and making the aurora visible farther from its usual polar range than normal. Skywatchers at mid-latitudes may get a rare chance to see the display, weather and darkness permitting, as space weather forecasters track the incoming solar material.
Why now: A heightened chance of visible auroras is drawing attention from skywatchers wondering whether they will be able to see the northern lights.
