La France Insoumise supporters are circulating claims about a police officer firing a mortar upward during a student protest, arguing the tactic was meant to protect demonstrating high school students rather than harm them. The episode is being framed by critics as political deception and a repeat of earlier confrontations between police and lycéens, fueling a partisan dispute over policing of protests in France.
Why now: A contested account of police tactics at a student demonstration has become a political flashpoint involving LFI.
