The Enlightened Psychopath: When Spiritual Teachers Lack Empathy
Original: 🪷 BDG Feature: The Enlightened Psychopath 🔗 Link in comments # Buddhism # Spirituality # SpiritualMaterialism # Spiritua
Buddhistdoor Global has published a feature examining the figure of the 'enlightened psychopath' - the possibility that a spiritual teacher could show deep meditative attainment while lacking empathy or conscience. The piece touches on spiritual materialism and spiritual bypassing, themes long raised by critics of charismatic gurus, and asks how Buddhist communities should evaluate teachers whose behaviour raises red flags.
Why now: Ongoing public concern about abusive or unethical spiritual teachers keeps the psychology of gurus a hot topic.
