Original: Gov. Hochul declares measles disaster emergency as cases rise in rural New York
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a disaster emergency in response to a growing measles outbreak in rural parts of the state. The declaration allows state agencies to respond more quickly to the spread of the highly contagious virus. The move comes as confirmed cases continue to rise, raising concern among health officials about vaccination rates and further transmission in affected communities.
Why now: A governor declaring a disaster emergency over measles is an unusual escalation that signals the outbreak is worsening.
