Lithuania votes to lift nuclear weapons ban
Original: Lithuania votes to lift nuclear weapons ban, Russia warns of ‘escalation of tensions’
Lithuania's parliament has voted to lift the country's ban on nuclear weapons, opening the door to hosting such arms on its territory. Moscow reacted swiftly, warning the move would mean an 'escalation of tensions' between Russia and NATO member Lithuania. The vote reflects growing security concerns in the Baltic states over Russian aggression and pushes debate about nuclear deterrence closer to Russia's borders.
Why now: Tensions between Russia and NATO are high, and a Baltic state moving to allow nuclear weapons is a major escalation in that standoff
